March already this week! P6/7 had an excellent day at the Garden for All workshops last week. In maths this week we are learning about decimals (tenths and hundredths) and fractions. We have been busy editing our dramatic Scottish myths and poems in writing lessons. On Thursday this week we will be celebrating World Book Day with some reading adventures…don’t forget to come as a book character! We have started to do some regular runs around the school area- 10-15 minutes to improve our fitness and stamina. We’re planning a variety of different routes depending on the weather. There is a real buzz about reading in our class at the moment, which is very encouraging to see! During the week we have a variety of reading activities : group reading, home reading, silent reading, speedy reader computer texts and reading comprehension. We are also listening to Scottish Mythical Creatures stories and The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell. We have the last of the Youth Music Initiative (YMI) lessons this Thursday. Everyone has really enjoyed these lesson with Kim Richards from Ullapool. She has been teaching clapping rhythms, tin whistle tunes and lots of traditional Scottish songs. Last Thursday in P.E. we had a cross-country run to the head of the loch; weather permitting we will try this again this week. On Friday we have a visit from an environmental education officer. On Monday P7 will be at the high school for their first Goblin Car build day. Last week everyone worked really well writing their Scottish myth stories and we will be continuing to edit and finely tune them this week. We have started to create a lovely display in the corridor with our stories and paintings. In science we are researching Scottish scientists, we have to take notes and then use the notes to create short biographies. We have made 3D models of three local mountains with paper mache- they just need to dry so we can paint them. We have also been busy creating a 3D landscape map of NW Sutherland as we are leaning the names of lochs, rivers and mountains in our area. The planet Venus has been very visible in the night sky recently- really bright, quite close to the moon. In writing lessons this week we will be writing character descriptions and learning about the features of biographies. In maths we are working on our multiplication and division skills. As part of our Scotland topic we have been learning where the main Scottish cities are. We have started to make three local mountains and we are making a 3D landscape maths of this area using paper mache. In science we have been investigating melting points and freezing points using thermometers. This week we are going to make our very own ice cream…using ice and salt! On Thursday we will be celebrating the life and work of Robert Burns- everyone is invited to wear tartan for our Burn’s Supper with poems, singing and dancing. In maths this week we are continuing to learn different methods of multiplication and division. We are busy practicing our play every day and making scenery too. Throughout advent we will be learning the significance of some of our Christmas traditions. On Wednesday we will be learning more about St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. She will be teaching upper primary for the next three Thursdays in place of Mrs Smart. After Christmas Miss Gounden will be returning to teach part-time. Homework For the next two weeks : Playscripts and song words. The aim is for everyone to be script-free when we begin our rehearsals in the hall next Monday. We are busy practicing the songs, dances and scenes for our school play now. This week we will also begin to make various props. This week in our writing lessons we will be creating some remembrance poems and prayers for our school assembly of Friday. In imaginative writing we are learning to create interesting settings ;making sure we are writing in one tense too! We are working on grammar skills on Thursdays to help us with this...We are trying to increase the variety of punctuation marks we use ! On maths we are learning to explain what strategies we are using in our ‘number talks’ sessions. In measuring maths we are learning different units of length/weight and how to convert them. On Wednesday we have a visit from the ambulance service. P7 pupils will be taking part in a Sports Leaders training workshop this Tuesday and next. Lights,Camel,Action: Play scripts Everyone now has a playscript for this year’s Christmas play. The roles haven’t yet been finalised but everyone is keen to have a go reading through the scripts. Once everyone’s role is sorted out scripts can go home for children to learn. There will also be song words too- this will be the reading homework for this term.
