Batty 4 Bats!
As part of National Science Week we had a workshop day all about the secret lives of these fascinating mammals...We learnt how they communicate by using echolocation, about some of the hazards that they face, we even turned one of our classrooms into 'The World of Bats' where we looked at the size and variety of different bat species. We made bat flip books and bat puppets too...we definitely were Batty 4 Bats by the end!

Fair-Trade Challenge Day
|
The upper primary pupils from Kinlochbervie, Durness and Scourie met up together to take part in a Fair-Trade Day. The day started with the 'Paper Bag Challenge' . Everyone was in groups of five and they had to make as many paper bags as possible in 20 minutes. The challenge was to give everyone an idea of how 60 million children in India take part in child labour work . In Kolkata, India children may work for 10 hours a day making paper bags for rice and spices. They receive 1 rupee (about 1 pence) for every 20 they make.
The next activity involved learning about fair-trade crops and how they can make a real difference to farmers in developing countries. Everyone made fair-trade banana and chocolate cookies. The third task involved up-cycling : making bracelets and bangles from stuff we would usually throw away like plastic bottles and old pens. Everyone was very impressed with the results. What a day! What a difference we could all make if we think about the way we live too :) |
